Leaders Are Made, Not Born.
It used to be my belief that leadership was solely an innate quality, something people were born with. However, I now know from personal experience that this isn’t the case.
This realization came during a transformative month-long whitewater canoeing expedition with NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) through Desolation Canyon in Utah. Having never before been canoeing or undertaken anything quite so challenging, I was genuinely scared. For the initial days, the question of survival constantly echoed in my mind. It was precisely this fear, however, that confirmed I needed to embark on this journey. I knew I had to confront my anxieties, step outside my comfort zone, and give it my all.
Although I gained practical skills like interpreting river bends and water speed to effectively scout rapids and navigate downstream, the expedition was designed to test my leadership abilities (and, admittedly, push my own personal boundaries). Alongside six fellow students and three instructors who evaluated my leadership potential, I was assessed on crucial skills such as communication, self-awareness, judgment and decision-making, conflict resolution, and my resilience in the face of adversity and uncertainty.
These experiences played a significant role in shaping my personal leadership style. Because of this expedition, I am confident in my ability to lead in any future situation. I've grown into the leader I aspired to be, and now I am passionate about helping others discover their own inner leader through their unique life experiences.
